Lane United is excited to announce the signing of its newest head coach, Manny Martins, who will lead the club during its 2021 USL2 season.
Martins has experience at many levels of soccer, having coached in both high school and college settings, as well as with United States Youth and Senior National Teams.
Martins has lived in Eugene since 2014 and currently works as the associate head coach with the University of Oregon Women’s Soccer Team. He cited Eugene’s tight-knit soccer community as a major factor in joining Lane United.
“We’re all sort of interconnected,” said Martins. “It just feels like everyone knows each other and we’re able to support each other, which is a truly unique thing. You don’t really get to experience that in some of the big cities.”
Martins highlighted, “Lane United is such a good representation of the soccer community in Eugene...It just felt like a good opportunity to contribute to the local community.”
Martins’ hiring comes at a crucial time for the club after the COVID-19 pandemic halted play last season. “I am thrilled that in a year of such uncertainty, we were able to land a coach of such pedigree as Manny,” emphasized LUFC Managing Director Dave Galas. “He has coached at the highest level, he's a winner, but above all, he's a wonderful human being and we are proud to have him lead us in 2021.”
Martins can’t wait to get the ball rolling, either. “Obviously, it’s a different year in terms of COVID and the schedule,” he said. “Nevertheless, the goal is to go out there and compete and step on the field with the objective of winning every game.”
