Lane United FC will host PDX FC at 7pm on Friday, June 4th, in their first match of the 2021 USL League Two season.
The Reds hosted another Portland-based club, International Portland Select FC, last Saturday in their first-ever match at Civic Park. The preseason friendly produced six goals in a thrilling 3-3 draw.
This will be LUFC’s first competitive match at the revamped venue, however. As part of USL League Two’s Western Conference, the Reds will compete in the Northwest Division alongside Portland-based PDX FC and Timbers U-23s – who actually play in Salem – as well as Albany’s Oregon Valley Futbol Alliance.
The four clubs will play one other four times each (twelve matches total for each team), alternating home and away venues.
PDX FC boast a strong roster, including former Lane United defender Chris Kalla and former Portland Timbers midfielder Kalif Alhassan.
The 2017-established Portland club won all three of their preseason friendlies, including a 2-1 win over IPSFC.
The Reds won’t be phased, though, because they know they have the firepower to keep up. “We’re gonna score goals, no doubt about it,” remarked now-former Lane United Head Coach Manny Martins. “The key is: Can we do what we need to do to make sure that we don’t concede?”
Martins recently accepted the Women’s Head Coaching job at Utah State, handing over the reins to new head man Jason Carney for the regular season.
Carney, who began his coaching career under the tenure of David Moyes at Preston North End FC, is eager to get on the sidelines for the Reds. As a veteran of the game, he’s focused on his players’ mentalities as well as physical attributes.
“The value of being on a team and finding solutions together can shape a person's character,” he asserted. “I believe everybody has talent, but talent comes second to character.” (Read more about Carney’s hire here)
The energy of the Lane United faithful was felt last Saturday, and the fans will be in full force for the season opener. With Lane County’s recent move to moderate risk for COVID-19, capacity at Civic Park has been increased for Friday night’s match.
Tickets for the match are available here. No walk-up tickets will be sold, though fans can purchase them on their mobile devices at the gate prior to entry.
