Aaaaaannnnnnnndddddd we’re back!! After a long year-and-a-half, the Reds are officially picking up from where they left off nearly two years ago and kicked things off with a week of training sessions.
The team got started with a trio of pretty intense afternoon sessions on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, which included participation from a handful of trialists, and wrapped things up with a recovery session on Saturday evening.
Lane United FC staff and players are feeling optimistic about the beginning of the USL League Two season and new Head Coach Manny Martins has been settling in extremely well with his new squad. After the first handful of practices, this season is looking to be extremely exciting. The Reds have brought in some new talent from all over in order to face the upcoming season.
Coach Martins has a very positive outlook after the first few practices and is looking to have a great summer. In Martins’ own words, “We still have some work to do, but we’ve definitely made some strides over the first few days.” The squad spent a lot of time focusing on things in the attacking third, playing aggressively and on the front foot. Martins also touched upon the fact that there are some players who’ve yet to arrive and with whom he’s very excited to be working, “I’m looking forward to seeing what the players coming are going to add to what we've got, because we still have some areas where we’re trying to sort out on who’s going to play where.” Overall, it’s still very early in the season, but Coach Martins is excited to get to work and bring some success to Eugene.
Tommy Case, a central midfielder who returns to the Reds after playing for them in 2019, is also very excited to get the new season underway and touched on his ambitions for the season, “The goal is to obviously win this group of four and I think we have the players to do it, and I’d like to contribute to that as much as I can.” As a whole, the squad seems extremely motivated to be playing again and getting back up to match fitness. The Reds have talented players from all across the globe and the expectations are high, from the coaching staff down to each of the individual players.
The squad will get back to work this coming week with sessions on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, before opening up the season with a preseason friendly against International Portland Select FC on Saturday, May 29, at Civic Park. Kickoff time is set for 7p.
