It was a night to remember for Lane United FC as they earned their first victory of the season, a 3-0 dismantling of Oregon Valley Futbol Alliance at Civic Park in Eugene. The Reds took control early via a José Carlos González goal and never let up. Calvan Berteau added the second, while González completed his impressive brace in the second half to seal the deal for Lane United.
The Reds had a satisfying first half, dominating possession and playing physical defense. On the left side of the home team’s attack, forward Kento Takamura and winger Ed Port found plenty of space, especially in transition play.
In the 20th minute, the Reds struck first blood. José Carlos González got his head on the end of a curling left-footed cross from Port to score his second goal of the season.
But the damage wasn’t done. In the 32nd minute, with Lane United pouring on the pressure, a blocked cross leaked out to defender Calvan Berteau at the top-left of the box. Berteau smashed the ball with his left foot across the keeper and into the right side of the goal. It was his first goal of the year, and an impressive one at that.
Lane United controlled much of the match, although OVF Alliance were not without their chances. Albert Escuin made nine saves on the night, a season high for the Reds' captain. The final chance in particular was a close miss. Substitute John Sarna got behind the Reds’ back line and skewed his shot just wide from a clear angle.
Lane United were pushing the entire second half for the third goal, and they finally found it late in the match. After Takamura won a challenge high up the pitch, he poked the ball to Gonzalez at the top of the OVF Alliance box. González stroked the ball into the bottom corner of the goal for his brace, giving the goalkeeper zero chance.
Diego Gonzalez-Ruiz was one of two substitutions for Lane United, as he and Habib Binate made their respective returns to the pitch.
OVF goalkeeper Massimo Pomponi received another yellow card in this match for a foul outside the box on Takamura, similar to the one on which he injured Harper Neubeck with when these teams first met two weeks ago. Takamura, however, was able to continue.
This was the first match Lane United in which were able to wear their new 2021 home kits, featuring a tartan, lumberjack-inspired design. You can pick one up for yourself at shop.laneutd.com! Lane United will take on Portland Timbers U23 on the road in Salem this Sunday at 2pm.
