Lane United’s woes continued on Friday night, June 25th, with a 3-2 home loss to Portland Football Club. José Carlos González and Calvin Berteau bagged a goal apiece, but the Reds were unable to overcome the visitors.
After trailing for most of the match, Lane United stormed back in the second half to nearly tie the game at the death. Unfortunately, the match came down to a few tense calls.
“I’m not one for whining about referees, you know, I respect them,” commented Lane United coach Jason Carney. “But yeah...if you don’t get [a call], you’ve got to get on with it.”
A questionable 82nd-minute penalty for PDX FC extended the visitors’ lead to 3-1 before Lane United got a chance to cut the deficit once more. Forward José Carlos González, who scored the Reds' first goal of the day 10 minutes prior, was denied from the spot by PDX FC goalkeeper Austin Rogers.
The 72nd-minute goal was Gonzalez’ fourth of the season, leading all scorers for the Eugene squad. “I saw Jordan running like a f***ing warrior,” said Gonzalez. “He put the ball in and I saw the far post was covered, so I tried to finish at the [near] post and fortunately, it went in.”
Lane United would get their second goal in the 96th-minute of stoppage time, as Calvan Berteau headed in a corner kick from Edoardo Merci.
As the Reds pressed for a last-gasp equalizer, Berteau tumbled over a PDX defender in the box for what initially seemed like a penalty. But the referee ended up awarding a free kick the other way, adding a caution to Merci for dissent.
The match ended a minute later at 3-2. This final was Lane United’s third loss of the 2021 campaign to PDX FC, all of which were by just a goal each.
Lane United FC had the best early chance, as Merci got a touch to a Kento Takamura cross, but Rogers cleaned out Merci before he could direct the ball on target. In what appeared to those in attendance to be a "stonewall" penalty, none was given.
PDX FC had the majority of chances in the first half, Escuin finding the ball in the back of his net via PDX forward Jacob Babalai after it appeared to cross the endline for a goal kick. PDX midfielder Lorenzo Lopez would double the lead in the 38th minute.
