Lane United FC fought back from a 2-0 halftime deficit to earn a draw versus Oregon Valley Futbol Alliance 2-2 in the final home match of the 2021 season at Civic Park on Sunday, July 11th.
When asked about the team’s motivation in the second half, Jackmon cited the lopsided loss to PDX FC just two days prior.
“Just coming off that loss, that was tough, so we just wanted to get back on the field and get a win,” he said, adding that a tie in this fashion was sufficient.
Edoardo Merci scored the equalizing penalty in the 86th minute, capping off a turbulent season with a bright note at home.
“I was thinking to go middle [with the spot kick], but fortunately I changed my mind,” Merci offered after the final whistle. “It’s a special day. This one’s for the fans, for this beautiful city.”
Jackmon’s 57th-minute goal came off a great ball from defender Calvan Berteau, who curled a long ball from the left flank around two defenders and into the path of the converted striker to make it 2-1.
“I was honestly looking at Jordan before I even got the ball,” Berteau commented postgame. “When I looked up, there was no doubt in my mind that I was gonna find him in behind the defense.”
OVF Alliance struck first in the 11th minute as Kevin Galiano somehow kept the ball in play and sent a cross to Brendan Herb, whose shot from distance tapped in off the far post. Multiple LUFC defenders initially thought Galiano’s dribble had gone out of bounds, prompting confusion that allowed Herb to get his shot off quickly.
Wesley Frankel would double the visitors’ lead in the 23rd minute, poking a shot into the net after a long dribble down the left by Galiano.
Head Coach Jason Carney and goalkeeper Albert Escuin both made their returns to the pitch after being stuck in Florida during Friday’s match against PDX FC due to Hurricane Elsa.
“The first half was probably the poorest I’ve seen us—and that’s probably a hangover from Friday,” said Carney. “The second half was obviously a lot better than the first...but at least we got something out of it so I’m pleased with it.”
The Reds will finish up their 2021 season on Friday, July 16th, as they travel to Salem to face Timbers U23, who wrapped up first place in the Northwest Division earlier today with a 2-1 win over PDX FC.
