Lane United were dealt a 4-2 home loss at the hands of Timbers U23 on July 2nd, 2021. A brace from José Carlos González was not enough to overcome an offensive tidal wave from the Salem boys.
A second-minute penalty gave the Reds an early lead before Laukoa Santos equalized for the U23s in the 21st minute. Fifteen minutes later, Ivan Mykhailenko would give the visitors a 2-1 lead off a corner kick.
Things would worsen for Lane United to start the second half as a deflected shot from David Brog looped high in the air and ended up in the back of the net in the 48th minute.
González extended his season scoring total to six, the most on the team for Lane United. He earned the early penalty himself by drawing a foul from U23 goalkeeper George Tasouris after receiving a through ball from Henry Cromack, who detailed the play: "Kwak wins the ball high, I get it, Jose makes a great run, forces the goalkeeper into a position he doesn't wanna be [in], great penalty...That's the kind of stuff we need to continue in training and execute in the games."
"I honestly don't know what happened," González chuckled of the penalty buildup. "I know that I got a good ball and it was just me against the goalie. I tried to dribble him...fortunately it was a PK...I missed a PK in my last game against PDX, so I think it was a good chance to prove myself and to try to help the team."
Gonzalez’ second goal was a touch of class—guiding the ball out of the air and into the far post with one touch following a great cross from Gustafson.
"Scott has been playing pretty high this week on the right line," González offered. "We know that once he gets there, he can put the ball wherever he wants...he just put in a good ball and I just put the ball in the side of the net."
The Reds will have a week's rest before playing PDX FC in Gresham next Friday at 7pm.
