Hassani Dotson and Khiry Shelton led their respective teams to MLS playoff victories, with the latter providing an assist and scoring the decisive kick in SKC's penalty shootout, Álex Pantoja opened his account with CD Guadalajara, and Ximo Miralles earned yet another clean sheet for CD Numancia. KHIRY SHELTON – SPORTING KANSAS CITY (MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER) Shelton started and played all 120 minutes for Sporting Kansas City in their dramatic penalty kick shootout win over San Jose. Shelton supplied what seemed to be the game-winning assist in the 91st minute to make the game 3-2, using a lovely back-heel pass to open up Gianluca Busio’s goal—but the ageless Chris Wondolowski evened things back up with a 97th-minute header. The game went into extra time and then penalty kicks, where Shelton converted the crucial third penalty by sending JT Marcinkowski the wrong way. Kansas City will host fourth-seeded Minnesota United FC in the Western Conference Semifinals on December 1st or 2nd, with Shelton facing fellow former Red Hassani Dotson. HASSANI DOTSON – MINNESOTA UNITED FC (MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER) Dotson started and played a full 90 for Minnesota United FC in their 3-0 first-round victory over Colorado, although he did so in a different position than usual. Hassani played right back despite usually being in the center of the park in a holding-midfielder role. Dotson recorded team-highs in pressures (34) and blocks (7) while also recording six tackles and completing 42 of 51 passes. The Loons, who finished fourth in the West, will now travel to face first-seeded SKC in the Western Conference Semifinals on December 1st or 2nd. ÁLEX PANTOJA – CD GUADALAJARA (SPANISH TERCERA DIVISIÓN) It recently came to our attention that former Lane United midfielder Álex Pantoja, one of our famed Spanish Armada members from the 2015 season, is plying his trade at Spanish side CD Guadalajara.
XIMO MIRALLES – CD NUMANCIA (SPANISH SEGUNDA B DIVISION) Miralles earned his third shutout of the season in CD Numancia’s nil-nil draw against Real Oviedo B on Saturday, their second scoreless match of the season. The netminder had a relatively relaxed day in goal, as Oviedo failed to register a single shot on target. Miralles has now only conceded two goals in five games on the young season for a sparkling 0.4 GAA, good for tops in the division. You can check out his top saves of the season in this video. For Spanish speakers who would like to see his recent interview posted to the club’s website, where he highlights the “team’s winning mentality,” you can click here. He was also invited as a featured guest on local channel La Soria 8 for another interview last week and had a feature article written about him by local media outlet El Día Soria. Joel again manned the midfield as San Roque de Lepe got back in the winning column this past weekend with a 3-1 victory over Castilleja CF. The holding midfielder has played every minute of the season so far for the Spanish club. The win moves the club back up into 3rd place in Group 10-B of Spain’s Tercera División, tied on points with second-placed CD Utrera.
