First Responders Face Off in Thrilling Return to Civic Park

Civic Park came back to life this weekend as Lane United hosted a friendly match between local first responders. This was the first game at the newly rebuilt stadium, nearly a decade after the original was lost in a fire in 2015. The matchup, which featured both police officers (ESPD) and firefighters (ESFD), wasn’t just ceremonial, as both teams showed real soccer experience, making it a competitive return to the pitch.

Despite the ESFD dominating possession and connecting more passes through the midfield, ESPD held their ground defensively, with a strong back line and standout saves from their keeper. ESFD created more chances, racking up seven shots on goal and 17 shots total, but ESPD made the most of their opportunities including a well-executed goal by #3, Keetle, after a ball slipped behind the ESFD defense in the first half.

In the second half, momentum shifted in ESPD’s favor. ESPD gained more possession and kept the ball on the attacking end, scoring three additional goals and sealing a 4–0 shutout victory. The ESPD’s keeper, Fechtel, was a standout performer, making multiple saves and in the 90th minute Fechtel saved a penalty to secure his clean sheet. Though the ESFD brought full intensity, held more possession and had over twice as many shots on goal, ESPD’s back line held strong, denying every shot and breakaway. The match was competitive and a meaningful tribute to the community, a perfect way to honor both the past and the future of Civic Park.
